WWII VETERAN RECEIVES COMMUNITY SUPPORT
The Valley Resource Center and Menifee Lions Club presented checks and donations to Don Reed, a local veteran at his home Saturday, March 25th, 2017. Local fundraising participants and organizations who donated and provided assistance were there to celebrate and appreciate our local hero.
Don Reed, 92-years-old, served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII at the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was blown out of a foxhole just 170 yards from the iconic flag raising atop Mount Suribachi. The battle of Iwo Jima took place from February 19th – March 25th, 1945. Almost one third of those involved in the war resulted in casualties and it was the costliest battle of the war. Don returned a hero and moved to Sun City many years ago. Some fondly remember when he would decorate his house with Christmas lights every year and dress as Santa Claus to bring cheer to those he encountered.
A neighbor in Sun City, Fred, heard about a veteran whose benefits had run out and had a house in need of crucial repairs and contacted local organizations for assistance. The flooring was damaged creating a slip and fall hazard, the leaky roof desperately needed repairs, and the air conditioning was not working properly. The local organizations decided to do something about it. Mr. Reed served his country valiantly, and now his community came together to serve him.
The Valley Resource Center, a local 501c3 nonprofit organization immediately sprung into action and raised funds for repairs, hearing aids, and other necessities from public donations. Menifee Cal Tru Value Hardware donated smoke detectors, cleaning supplies, and outlet covers, which contributes to a safer environment. Raven Hilden, the CEO of the Valley Resource Center coordinated with Dave the owner of Standard Carpet and Flooring and they generously repaired the flooring, eliminating the slip and fall hazard.
Local organizations and the community came together in a time of need to assist a local hero with critical housing repairs and necessities when he needed it most. With the direction from caring neighbors, including Fred, Lisa Mariella and Jenny, local organizations such as the Valley Resource Center, the Menifee Lions Club, numerous individuals and multiple organizations worked together to selflessly gave back to a man who sacrificed all to preserve the freedoms and safety for future generations.
Thank you to all those who donated and gave your time to help our community hero in time of need!
